The chestetron poem by G. Chesterton’s great poem commemorating the naval victory of the Holy Roman League in the battle of Lepanto. I read this to my children, great literary work for the entire family. This is the first of Chesterton’s poems I have read, and it does not disappoint.

But not only have English classes neglected this masterpiece of rhyme and meter, History classes have neglected the story of the pivotal battle upon which the poem is based.

The poem is fully annotated, and is supplemented with two interesting essays by Chesterton himself. Then follows a long, redundant commentary which does not even pretend to scholarly objectivity but preaches, hard, to the choir. Lepanto is a poem by G. The Man Who Was Thursday.

Sharkface rated it liked it Apr 18, Lepanto is another good poem by Chesterton, with some masterful word-play “[The ships] fling great shadows foe-wards,” as opposed to “forwards”and excellent foils the dark, suntanned Arab commander standing on deck, while the cesterton, sunless Christian slaves work the oars underneath.


For the poem alone I would give this five stars. They have dared the white republics up the capes of Italy.
